Episode Summary

What does water mean to you… physically, emotionally, or spiritually? From Traditional Chinese Medicine and tarot to witchy rituals and emotional release, we cover all aspects of the water element.

Tune in to hear about the importance of emotional flow, nervous system regulation, and how water ties us to the moon, the cosmos, and even each other. Plus, we somehow detour into pepper-fueled sneeze attempts, Michael Jackson’s effect on plants, and a surprisingly sacred pee ritual. Yes, really.

Allright enough about plants for now Herecomes the rest of the juicy stuff Tellme about traditional Chinese medicineOkay water In TCM water is it's one ofmy favorite elements It's one of myfavorites It's associated with theorgans of the kidney and the urinarybladder but it's also connected with thebones and the ears and it very muchrepresents our adaptability and ourrenewal It's linked to emotions likefear and courage in the season of winterwhich is the most yinseason I'msorry I'll spare you Happy to listen toall ofthem I take it back Sniffing pepperworks So it's the most yin element tiedto the most yin season If you missedlast episode yin and yang are adjectiveswe use to describe different energies intraditional Chinese medicine So yin isthe more receptive it's slower it'sdarker it's more inward focused it'smore of that being rather than doing SoI think of water so much as like almostlike you know how water can have almostlike we talked about fire last week asit can be a pilot light to a wildfireWater can be still or it can be atsunami And so that's I think that's whyI love the pairing of fire and water aslike balancing each other because theyboth can have such big big big highs andlow lowlows The kidneys are really important intraditional Chinese medicine becausethey store what's called your kidneyjing which is essentially your lifeforce energy So the belief is that wehave a set amount of life force energythat is housed in thekidneys And so the strength of yourkidneys equals like the longevity ofyour life and the strength of you knowevery function in your body all theother organs are sort of um impacted bythe health of the kidneys Andso the way that I think of this in termsof water is water is so tied to ouremotional resilience and our nervoussystem And so when our nervous system isfunctioning well balanced you know we'rewe're able to kind of fluctuate betweenthat survival response when we need itbut come back into relaxation when wedon't need it we stay in balance we canexperience greater health and healing inthe whole body Everything functionsbetter But when that is out of whack thenervous system is out of whack we areless emotionally resilient So littlethings will kind of trigger thatfight-flight freeze response And thenour immune systems are compromised Ourdigestive systems our cardiovascularsystems are affected Like every systemin your body is affected by that Andit's so tied to like those emotions andto water in general right we're made upof so much water One of my teachers sayswe're basically like cucumbers withanxiety You know it's like what like 97%water at this point Mhm And so when youexperience dehydration you alsoexperience a whole host of you knowsymptoms that affect all the differentparts of your body And so I think tuninginto that balance in water balance inour emotional system it really impactsthe entire system as a whole Yeah Ithink that focusing on the water elementreally does show us how the emotionaland the physical are so interconnectedYou know that that connection betweenour internal world and our externalworld is it becomes very clear when wetalk about water Mhm DefinitelyDefinitely And so I see the connectionto water If we were to like label itwith different emotional states whenwe're out of balance we might experiencefear When we're in balance we'llexperience flow right i also see waterso tied to our intuition and like thisdeep deep sense of wisdom and trust MhmLike when we're able to flow with waterthe the image I always get is like ifyou're standing in the water on thebeach and you're being pelted by thewaves you can either be really rigid andthe water is going to hurt right it'llsmack into you it'll surprise you it'llbe a cold shock maybe it'll knock youover in some cases Or you can looseneverything in your body and you can flowwith the water and now all of a suddenit doesn't impact you as much Yeah Ithink like that ties in really well towhat water kind of symbolizes in from apagan witchcraft perspective because itis deeply deeply tied to intuition andalso something that I think about a lotlike you said we're 97% water it'sdeeply tied to the lunar cycle you knowthink about how the moon moves the tidesand think about what that might mean inyour physical body You know thatconnection I see like I see people talkabout it on TikTok all the time likethat that deep connection that a lot ofus feel to themoon I think is because of the waterthat is literally a part of us you knowlike we feel that eb and flow as well Wefeel that push and pull And so water asan element in from a witchcraftperspective really does represent thatlike tie to not just the moon but alsoto me like to the great world beyond youknow like to to all of space to thatlike reminder that we are so muchsmallerthan we seem you know like the thatconnection to the moon then reminds meof the connection that we have to thestars and all the other planets and likehow we're a part of this interconnectedsystemYeah And we're interconnected with eachother Like isn't it true is this is this[ __ ] this time on Demystify Magic isit true or is it [ __ ] is this[ __ ] the water we have on the planetis like in a circular system right wedon't get more of it Yeah No no no YeahIt's all the same water So all the waterYes Famously Yeah Famously That's whythat I just remember the Tik Tok trendwhere if you saw a water bottle like onthe side of the road you opened it up sothe water wasn't trapped Oh yeah Youremember that yeah Yes And I was likethat is some witchcraft That is somewitchcraftUndoy Anyway what I was saying in likethe grossest way possible all the waterthat's been inside me has also beeninside you EwBut like we're all connected I hatedthatIn the in the grossest way that we couldbe connected No for sure And we are alsoconnected to all the people who camebefore us and all the people who willcome after us Like we have this onecommon thread through this water that weshare And that is where our deep wisdomcomes from Like I see so much of whenwhen I talk about intuition I talk somuch about like theinterconnectedness the I am one with youyou are one with me we are one with allWe're just one light in multiple bodiesAnd I think when we can start to seethat interconnectedness one we step outof our ego we step out of the me me andwe step into just this sense of trustand deep-seated wisdom Like every singleperson that has come before you hasfigured it out so far Every single timeyou thought you couldn't figure it outso far you have Everything is figureoutable And so when we can drop intothat element of water when we can dropinto that interconnectedness drop out ofour head and into our body regulate ouremotions enough that our nervous systemstabilizes we can find the answer withinus to move forward Mhm And I think thatties in really well to the suit of cupsin tarot as well because it is so muchabout emotion but it is also deeplyabout our relationship with others ourconnections with other peopleAnd what I love like what I love so muchabout water and that feeling ofconnection is that it is not just theconnection that we have with people whoare here on earth It ties into thatintuition to share our connectednesswith those who are no longer here withthose who did come before usAnd it can also really tie into ourrelationship with ourselves I see thatas like a really deep part of ourintuition as well Because when we don'thave when we're out of balance in ourrelationship with ourselveswe can't experience that connection withother people And that means that wecan't experience that connection to ourintuition Mhm And that's very yin likethat turning inward to the self lookinginward for the answer rather thanlooking outward Oh yes I love thatTotallyMhm Crystals you can use to work withwaterelement isaquamarine One of my faves That'sprobably my top pick for water Greatsong by Addison Ray I was going to sayuh great line from Taylor Swift greattelevision show from the late 90s greatDisney movie Mhm True True Mhm Mhm Maybethat's what I'm thinking of Yeah maybeI'm thinking of a different TV showWhat's the TV show called or Nora Glorywith the mermaids Oh come on You got toknow it I know Aquamarine had mermaidsMaybe it's H2O I'm googling Sorryeveryone we're taking a hard It's H2OReally good for tapping into the waterelement Water Great TV showBlue Cowsite is another one I reallylike And ChrysacolaI would not have guessed ChrysacolaReally i mean it is blue I think of SoChrysacola to me is like the waterwithin the earthbecause it is very like earth elementbut it's like Yeah Yeah It's like a awet soil kind of feeling So it's likegot that really nice grounded quality tothe water element Yeah Yeah Yeah Okaythat makes sense I like that Mhm It willcome as a surprise to no one that myfavorite way to use water as a ritualtool would be crying Crying One thingabout me if you listen to this podcastyou know I love to cry Love a sillylittle silly little cry I think thatthat is like the most powerful It's likea it's almost like an offering of yourown water in a way You know you'regiving a piece of you back to the earthIt's the ultimate release you know likeyou you say like with this I I give alittle bit of my pain back[Music]Okay that makes mine sound way lessbeautiful but I was going to say you canturn your bathroom ritual into a ritualof connecting with water So TCM waterconnected with like when you go pissgirl Yeah Connected to the kidneys andthe bladder Another way to give yourwater back Giving your water back Likerelease like really like when your bodyis releasing focus on releasing WhatWhat do you want to let go of whatemotional burdens can you put down andthen as you wash your hands cleanhopefully you wash your hands clean Ifnot please wash your hands clean If youif you need a reason to wash your handsknow that the ritual doesn't work unlessyou wash your handsJust imagine like clearing any anyenergy that's not yours away down thedrain I know that we usually say you arethe magic but in this case washing yourhands is themagic There is no magic without the thehand wash Yeah the intention issecondary to washing your hands with Sosing happy birthday if you have to whileyou do it Get under the fingernails[Laughter]Anyways other watery rituals you can dois you can talk to your water There's areally cool study that was done in JapanDr Emodo was the dude's name Maybeyou've heard of it before but he did avery famous water study where heessentially labeled different cups ofwater with either traditionally sort ofnegative intention words or positiveintention words So like gratitude andlove versus like I hate you and youdisgust me and Satan and etc And then hefroze the water and looked at it inunderneath this really really powerfulmicroscope And what he found was if youGoogle this you can see photos of it butthe water that was assigned thetraditionally like quote unquotepositive words created these reallysymmetrical almost like snowflakelooking forms whereas the ones that werenegative created these like black holelooking things And I always use that aslike reason to talk to my water And so Iand you can do this study with at homeif you want to A lot of times middleschools will do this with a plantThey'll call it the bully plantexperiment where they have a plant thatthey say mean things to and a plant theysay nice things to and the mean one italways dies Mhm Or some have done thisstudy on rice where you cook rice in twocups and then you say nice things to oneand mean things to the other and themean one molds faster which grosses meout So I will not be trying that Yeah Iwill not be participating I did back inHave I told you this story maybe I don'tknow Back in when I was in boardingschool I wanted to grow morning gloriesand I didn't understand how to growplants So I just bought morning gloryseeds off of eBay And because this wasthe early 2000s we didn't we didn't knowany better And I planted them in my dormroom in an old milk jug that I coveredswaddled in hoodies so that it would bewarm And then it wouldn't grow And I waslike why won't this morning glory growit's the middle of January in Maine Andso what I did was I took my 98 centearbuds and I put them under the soilAnd then on my tiny little iPod Nano Iplayed Michael Jackson's Thriller albumon repeat 24/7 for it and the thingsproutedYou heard it here first It was athriller Lance love Michael JacksonBut ever since then I was like "Okaysold sold like music soil talking toyour waterEverything I've ever soiled has beensoiled within you before Don't forgetthatinterconnectednessEw ew ew ew ew ew Anyways talking toyour water setting an intention for yourwater whether that's water you drink oryour bath your moon water your simmerpot your sparkly little beverage MhmAnother way to work with water that Ifound is giving your emotion as anofferingI've done this before specifically I doit a lot with anger If I have anger thatI can't let go of I say out loud like tothe earth or if there's a deity that youwork with or like really whoever orhowever you can say like I give you thisI give you this feeling I give you thisemotion Have it transmute it Do with itwhat you will for my highest good M Yeahbecause emotions are just energy andmotion EmotionI didn't get thatI didn't think you did I've heard itbefore I think Oh okaySorry That's I feel like that came outmeaner than I meant itWater your rituals that you wanted toshare You have any more splash into ourDMs and let us know Oh you're asking meCan we start that over noOkay we're keeping that I say it againSplash into our DMs and let take a dipin our DMs and let us know how you workwith waterOh also water makes a really greatoffering for spirits If you like have uhif you want to leave an offering forancestors and you don't know where tostart start with water It's a great oneYeah they get thirsty over thereOh Oh A spell that I really like OkaySpell that I really like I am someonethat I always have like a cup of wateror 10 next to me before bed like on mynightstand That becomes just like awater collection So what I started doingis to motivate myself to not collectwater by my bed I turn it into a spellAnd so I drink my water before bed rightand then I set it on my nightstand and Iask it to if there's like a an emotionthat I can't let go of or maybe a worryI can't let go of or something else thatI feel like I need protection from I askthe water to collect it and then in themorning because when you sleep your yourenergy field is much more porous Soyou're like shedding that stuff moreeasily So the water collects it and thenI take it So I have the water collect itand then I water a plant with it and Ilet the plant transmute it So if you aresomeone that collects cups of water onyour nightstand this is the spell foryou # mundane magic hashtag All Allright enough about plants for now Herecomes the rest of the juicy stuff Tellme about traditional Chinese medicineOkay water In TCM water is it's one ofmy favorite elements It's one of myfavorites It's associated with theorgans of the kidney and the urinarybladder but it's also connected with thebones and the ears and it very muchrepresents our adaptability and ourrenewal It's linked to emotions likefear and courage in the season of winterwhich is the most yinseason I'msorry I'll spare you Happy to listen toall ofthem I take it back Sniffing pepperworks So it's the most yin element tiedto the most yin season If you missedlast episode yin and yang are adjectiveswe use to describe different energies intraditional Chinese medicine So yin isthe more receptive it's slower it'sdarker it's more inward focused it'smore of that being rather than doing SoI think of water so much as like almostlike you know how water can have almostlike we talked about fire last week asit can be a pilot light to a wildfireWater can be still or it can be atsunami And so that's I think that's whyI love the pairing of fire and water aslike balancing each other because theyboth can have such big big big highs andlow lowlows The kidneys are really important intraditional Chinese medicine becausethey store what's called your kidneyjing which is essentially your lifeforce energy So the belief is that wehave a set amount of life force energythat is housed in thekidneys And so the strength of yourkidneys equals like the longevity ofyour life and the strength of you knowevery function in your body all theother organs are sort of um impacted bythe health of the kidneys Andso the way that I think of this in termsof water is water is so tied to ouremotional resilience and our nervoussystem And so when our nervous system isfunctioning well balanced you know we'rewe're able to kind of fluctuate betweenthat survival response when we need itbut come back into relaxation when wedon't need it we stay in balance we canexperience greater health and healing inthe whole body Everything functionsbetter But when that is out of whack thenervous system is out of whack we areless emotionally resilient So littlethings will kind of trigger thatfight-flight freeze response And thenour immune systems are compromised Ourdigestive systems our cardiovascularsystems are affected Like every systemin your body is affected by that Andit's so tied to like those emotions andto water in general right we're made upof so much water One of my teachers sayswe're basically like cucumbers withanxiety You know it's like what like 97%water at this point Mhm And so when youexperience dehydration you alsoexperience a whole host of you knowsymptoms that affect all the differentparts of your body And so I think tuninginto that balance in water balance inour emotional system it really impactsthe entire system as a whole Yeah Ithink that focusing on the water elementreally does show us how the emotionaland the physical are so interconnectedYou know that that connection betweenour internal world and our externalworld is it becomes very clear when wetalk about water Mhm DefinitelyDefinitely And so I see the connectionto water If we were to like label itwith different emotional states whenwe're out of balance we might experiencefear When we're in balance we'llexperience flow right i also see waterso tied to our intuition and like thisdeep deep sense of wisdom and trust MhmLike when we're able to flow with waterthe the image I always get is like ifyou're standing in the water on thebeach and you're being pelted by thewaves you can either be really rigid andthe water is going to hurt right it'llsmack into you it'll surprise you it'llbe a cold shock maybe it'll knock youover in some cases Or you can looseneverything in your body and you can flowwith the water and now all of a suddenit doesn't impact you as much Yeah Ithink like that ties in really well towhat water kind of symbolizes in from apagan witchcraft perspective because itis deeply deeply tied to intuition andalso something that I think about a lotlike you said we're 97% water it'sdeeply tied to the lunar cycle you knowthink about how the moon moves the tidesand think about what that might mean inyour physical body You know thatconnection I see like I see people talkabout it on TikTok all the time likethat that deep connection that a lot ofus feel to themoon I think is because of the waterthat is literally a part of us you knowlike we feel that eb and flow as well Wefeel that push and pull And so water asan element in from a witchcraftperspective really does represent thatlike tie to not just the moon but alsoto me like to the great world beyond youknow like to to all of space to thatlike reminder that we are so muchsmallerthan we seem you know like the thatconnection to the moon then reminds meof the connection that we have to thestars and all the other planets and likehow we're a part of this interconnectedsystemYeah And we're interconnected with eachother Like isn't it true is this is this[ __ ] this time on Demystify Magic isit true or is it [ __ ] is this[ __ ] the water we have on the planetis like in a circular system right wedon't get more of it Yeah No no no YeahIt's all the same water So all the waterYes Famously Yeah Famously That's whythat I just remember the Tik Tok trendwhere if you saw a water bottle like onthe side of the road you opened it up sothe water wasn't trapped Oh yeah Youremember that yeah Yes And I was likethat is some witchcraft That is somewitchcraftUndoy Anyway what I was saying in likethe grossest way possible all the waterthat's been inside me has also beeninside you EwBut like we're all connected I hatedthatIn the in the grossest way that we couldbe connected No for sure And we are alsoconnected to all the people who camebefore us and all the people who willcome after us Like we have this onecommon thread through this water that weshare And that is where our deep wisdomcomes from Like I see so much of whenwhen I talk about intuition I talk somuch about like theinterconnectedness the I am one with youyou are one with me we are one with allWe're just one light in multiple bodiesAnd I think when we can start to seethat interconnectedness one we step outof our ego we step out of the me me andwe step into just this sense of trustand deep-seated wisdom Like every singleperson that has come before you hasfigured it out so far Every single timeyou thought you couldn't figure it outso far you have Everything is figureoutable And so when we can drop intothat element of water when we can dropinto that interconnectedness drop out ofour head and into our body regulate ouremotions enough that our nervous systemstabilizes we can find the answer withinus to move forward Mhm And I think thatties in really well to the suit of cupsin tarot as well because it is so muchabout emotion but it is also deeplyabout our relationship with others ourconnections with other peopleAnd what I love like what I love so muchabout water and that feeling ofconnection is that it is not just theconnection that we have with people whoare here on earth It ties into thatintuition to share our connectednesswith those who are no longer here withthose who did come before usAnd it can also really tie into ourrelationship with ourselves I see thatas like a really deep part of ourintuition as well Because when we don'thave when we're out of balance in ourrelationship with ourselveswe can't experience that connection withother people And that means that wecan't experience that connection to ourintuition Mhm And that's very yin likethat turning inward to the self lookinginward for the answer rather thanlooking outward Oh yes I love thatTotallyMhm Crystals you can use to work withwaterelement isaquamarine One of my faves That'sprobably my top pick for water Greatsong by Addison Ray I was going to sayuh great line from Taylor Swift greattelevision show from the late 90s greatDisney movie Mhm True True Mhm Mhm Maybethat's what I'm thinking of Yeah maybeI'm thinking of a different TV showWhat's the TV show called or Nora Glorywith the mermaids Oh come on You got toknow it I know Aquamarine had mermaidsMaybe it's H2O I'm googling Sorryeveryone we're taking a hard It's H2OReally good for tapping into the waterelement Water Great TV showBlue Cowsite is another one I reallylike And ChrysacolaI would not have guessed ChrysacolaReally i mean it is blue I think of SoChrysacola to me is like the waterwithin the earthbecause it is very like earth elementbut it's like Yeah Yeah It's like a awet soil kind of feeling So it's likegot that really nice grounded quality tothe water element Yeah Yeah Yeah Okaythat makes sense I like that Mhm It willcome as a surprise to no one that myfavorite way to use water as a ritualtool would be crying Crying One thingabout me if you listen to this podcastyou know I love to cry Love a sillylittle silly little cry I think thatthat is like the most powerful It's likea it's almost like an offering of yourown water in a way You know you'regiving a piece of you back to the earthIt's the ultimate release you know likeyou you say like with this I I give alittle bit of my pain back[Music]Okay that makes mine sound way lessbeautiful but I was going to say you canturn your bathroom ritual into a ritualof connecting with water So TCM waterconnected with like when you go pissgirl Yeah Connected to the kidneys andthe bladder Another way to give yourwater back Giving your water back Likerelease like really like when your bodyis releasing focus on releasing WhatWhat do you want to let go of whatemotional burdens can you put down andthen as you wash your hands cleanhopefully you wash your hands clean Ifnot please wash your hands clean If youif you need a reason to wash your handsknow that the ritual doesn't work unlessyou wash your handsJust imagine like clearing any anyenergy that's not yours away down thedrain I know that we usually say you arethe magic but in this case washing yourhands is themagic There is no magic without the thehand wash Yeah the intention issecondary to washing your hands with Sosing happy birthday if you have to whileyou do it Get under the fingernails[Laughter]Anyways other watery rituals you can dois you can talk to your water There's areally cool study that was done in JapanDr Emodo was the dude's name Maybeyou've heard of it before but he did avery famous water study where heessentially labeled different cups ofwater with either traditionally sort ofnegative intention words or positiveintention words So like gratitude andlove versus like I hate you and youdisgust me and Satan and etc And then hefroze the water and looked at it inunderneath this really really powerfulmicroscope And what he found was if youGoogle this you can see photos of it butthe water that was assigned thetraditionally like quote unquotepositive words created these reallysymmetrical almost like snowflakelooking forms whereas the ones that werenegative created these like black holelooking things And I always use that aslike reason to talk to my water And so Iand you can do this study with at homeif you want to A lot of times middleschools will do this with a plantThey'll call it the bully plantexperiment where they have a plant thatthey say mean things to and a plant theysay nice things to and the mean one italways dies Mhm Or some have done thisstudy on rice where you cook rice in twocups and then you say nice things to oneand mean things to the other and themean one molds faster which grosses meout So I will not be trying that Yeah Iwill not be participating I did back inHave I told you this story maybe I don'tknow Back in when I was in boardingschool I wanted to grow morning gloriesand I didn't understand how to growplants So I just bought morning gloryseeds off of eBay And because this wasthe early 2000s we didn't we didn't knowany better And I planted them in my dormroom in an old milk jug that I coveredswaddled in hoodies so that it would bewarm And then it wouldn't grow And I waslike why won't this morning glory growit's the middle of January in Maine Andso what I did was I took my 98 centearbuds and I put them under the soilAnd then on my tiny little iPod Nano Iplayed Michael Jackson's Thriller albumon repeat 24/7 for it and the thingsproutedYou heard it here first It was athriller Lance love Michael JacksonBut ever since then I was like "Okaysold sold like music soil talking toyour waterEverything I've ever soiled has beensoiled within you before Don't forgetthatinterconnectednessEw ew ew ew ew ew Anyways talking toyour water setting an intention for yourwater whether that's water you drink oryour bath your moon water your simmerpot your sparkly little beverage MhmAnother way to work with water that Ifound is giving your emotion as anofferingI've done this before specifically I doit a lot with anger If I have anger thatI can't let go of I say out loud like tothe earth or if there's a deity that youwork with or like really whoever orhowever you can say like I give you thisI give you this feeling I give you thisemotion Have it transmute it Do with itwhat you will for my highest good M Yeahbecause emotions are just energy andmotion EmotionI didn't get thatI didn't think you did I've heard itbefore I think Oh okaySorry That's I feel like that came outmeaner than I meant itWater your rituals that you wanted toshare You have any more splash into ourDMs and let us know Oh you're asking meCan we start that over noOkay we're keeping that I say it againSplash into our DMs and let take a dipin our DMs and let us know how you workwith waterOh also water makes a really greatoffering for spirits If you like have uhif you want to leave an offering forancestors and you don't know where tostart start with water It's a great oneYeah they get thirsty over thereOh Oh A spell that I really like OkaySpell that I really like I am someonethat I always have like a cup of wateror 10 next to me before bed like on mynightstand That becomes just like awater collection So what I started doingis to motivate myself to not collectwater by my bed I turn it into a spellAnd so I drink my water before bed rightand then I set it on my nightstand and Iask it to if there's like a an emotionthat I can't let go of or maybe a worryI can't let go of or something else thatI feel like I need protection from I askthe water to collect it and then in themorning because when you sleep your yourenergy field is much more porous Soyou're like shedding that stuff moreeasily So the water collects it and thenI take it So I have the water collect itand then I water a plant with it and Ilet the plant transmute it So if you aresomeone that collects cups of water onyour nightstand this is the spell foryou # mundane magic hashtag All
